Re orderliness: on our Central North Island plateau, we have a desert landscape that surrounds our great volcanoes. What strikes me whenever I visit is that our desert plants (though different from yours in CA) are laid out in 'shrubberies', just as if they had been placed by a mighty gardener. I can relate to these works very easily.
